South Island United produced a dramatic late turnaround to defeat Vanuatu in the OFC Pro League, scoring twice in extended stoppage time to secure a 2–1 victory in Fiji.
The match began brightly for South Island United, who looked the more dangerous side early. Ryan Feutz was at the heart of the action, getting in behind the defence, rounding the goalkeeper, and coming agonisingly close to opening the scoring before narrowly missing the target. It was a warning sign of South Island United’s attacking intent, but one they were unable to build on consistently.
As the half wore on, Vanuatu grew into the contest and began to assert control. Backed by a passionate and vocal crowd, they created several promising chances and finished the first half the stronger of the two sides. The playing surface in Fiji proved a significant factor throughout, with divots and an uneven pitch disrupting rhythm and contributing to a stop-start, low-quality spectacle at times. A goalless scoreline at halftime fairly reflected the balance of play.
Vanuatu carried their momentum into the second half, starting on the front foot and creating a number of opportunities. While South Island United had patches of possession, they struggled to break down a disciplined, low defensive block. The match was further disrupted by multiple stoppages, including VAR interventions and a concerning injury to vice-captain Ollie Van Rijssel, who was stretchered off and taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. Fortunately, post-match X-rays confirmed no break, providing relief for the squad. He was replaced by Riley Grover, who made a composed and effective contribution off the bench.
The breakthrough eventually came for Vanuatu, who capitalised on their pressure with a well-worked goal, finished neatly from a cutback to take a deserved lead. Owen Smith, a standout performer throughout the Pro League, once again impressed and was named Man of the Match after consistently creating chances and driving Vanuatu forward.
With the game drifting away and time running out, the lengthy stoppages meant there was still an opportunity for a late twist. South Island United seized it in emphatic fashion.
Deep into added time, Ryan Feutz produced a moment of brilliance, striking a powerful free kick from outside the box that flew in the goal near post, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. The equaliser injected life into the contest and set up a dramatic finale.
Then, with virtually the last kick of the game, Ry McLeod delivered the decisive moment. After initially seeing his shot blocked, his persistence paid off as he regained possession, created space, and fired home from close range across the keeper to complete a remarkable comeback.
While the overall performance was at times disjointed, heavily influenced by difficult playing conditions, South Island United showed resilience and character when it mattered most. In a match that lacked fluency for long periods, they found quality in the decisive moments to secure all three points in unforgettable fashion.
