After the NZ Derby fixture against Auckland FC was postponed due to adverse weather conditions, South Island United turned their attention to completing their Round 3 Australian circuit campaign, facing hosts South Melbourne FC at the Home of the Matildas.

SIU were handed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes. Zeb produced a driving run into the penalty area from the left flank, drawing a late challenge from South Melbourne’s Painter-Andrews. Although the referee initially waved play on, a VAR review prompted a second look and, after brief deliberation, a penalty was awarded. Fuetz stepped up in search of his fifth goal of the OFC Pro League campaign, aiming high to the top-right corner, but his effort was superbly read by South Melbourne goalkeeper Lopez, who palmed the strike away to keep the contest scoreless.

Despite a dominant 15-minute spell from the hosts, it was South Island United who found the breakthrough in the 21st minute. A looping cross from Van Rijssel picked out David Yoo, who directed a header goalward that took a deflection off South Melbourne skipper Jankovic on its way through. With the ball dropping dangerously near the line, Giannakopoulos attempted to deal with it but made a meal of his headered clearance, inadvertently lobbing the ball into the roof of his own net to hand SIU a 1–0 lead.

The advantage proved short-lived. Just three minutes later, South Melbourne drew level when a sharp cutback from the byline found Uchida in space inside the box. His powerful strike flew toward the top-left corner; Van Dijk managed to get fingertips to the ball but could not prevent it from finding the net, restoring parity at 1–1 in the 24th minute.

South Melbourne continued to build momentum and took a well-deserved lead in the 32nd minute. A well-worked move ended with an inch-perfect cross to the back post, where Jankovic had drifted into space. The defender guided his header accurately beyond Van Dijk to give the hosts a 2–1 advantage.

Both sides pushed forward in an open closing period to the first half, creating chances in lively end-to-end spells. However, it was the hosts who looked more likely to extend their lead. A series of sharp saves and commanding interventions from Steven Van Dijk ensured South Melbourne’s dominance yielded no further reward, keeping the scoreline at 2–1 heading into the break.

South Melbourne extended their lead to 3–1 in the 72nd minute. A hopeful cross from Uchida dropped invitingly toward the edge of the box, where James Lackay arrived, controlled the bouncing ball, and struck it on the half-volley, thundering a powerful effort past Van Dijk and into the top-right corner.

Jordi Swibel then added a fourth to put the result beyond doubt, rising highest completely unopposed from a South Melbourne corner to power his header beyond Van Dijk. The striker’s sixth goal of the campaign capped off a dominant attacking display from the hosts, who ran out 4–1 victors. The result secured all three points and cemented South Melbourne’s place in second on the OFC Pro League table at the conclusion of Round 3.
